UK developer Supermassive Games has announced that the studio is currently assessing its current situation and that layoffs are coming soon.
In a statement posted to X, Supermassive claims that “the games industry is currently facing significant challenges, and unfortunately we aren’t immune.” While no specifics are provided, the statement goes on to say that “we are entering into a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues.”
While the official word from Supermassive doesn’t outwardly state how many staff will be affected, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg has reported that this upcoming round of layoffs will include “roughly 90 [people].”

Supermassive is most well-known for its brand of cinematic horror titles, such as Until Dawn, the Dark Pictures Anthology series and The Quarry. Atop this, the studio has also worked on various VR titles in Switchback, The Inpatient and Rush of Blood. Most recently, it was announced that Supermassive is working on Little Nightmares III, taking over from the developer of the first two games, Tarsier Studios.
These news pieces are becoming all too frequent, with 2024 getting off to a terrible start, with Microsoft laying off 1,900 staff and Riot axing 500 jobs to name but a small few.
We at WellPlayed send our best wishes to all affected by this, and all other studio layoffs in the industry as of late.
