WoW Classic Is Making Hardcore Rules A Reality

You can even duel people…TO THE DEATH

World of Warcraft: Classic has seen a very specific surge in popularity of late, with many dipping their toe into a radical mod that would both increase the games difficulty, and broadcast news of your demise when you ultimately met it.

The concept of a ‘Hardcore’ challenge is simple – effectively you have a character with only one mortal life, and when it ends that character is lost forever. No resurrections, no respawns – just like the morbid reality of our own mortal existence, death is forever.

Now, the mod did not have control over stopping you respawning – but the data capturing side of it would flag who had managed to follow the rules and achieve greatness. Blizzard has clearly noted how gangbusters this experience was going off, because there is now a proper Hardcore ruleset coming to the Classic World of Warcraft servers – and respawning is entirely disabled:

Hilariously, they also speak to the main issue that people had with the Mod-Hardcore experience – the rampant trolling to lure people to an untimely death. Everything from DDOS attacks to more targeted silliness, Blizzard mentions a zero tolerance policy to address this as a problem.

Full details include:

  • Death is Permanent
    • Players will get a single chance to level as high as they can and participate in more dangerous activities, such as the Molten Core raid.
    • Those who die will not be able to return to their bodies but can release and remain a ghost—in this form, they can close out their remaining business on the realm, such as guild masters transferring guild leadership to another player.
  • Mak’gora and other PVP Changes
    • Battlegrounds will not be enabled on Hardcore Realms.
    • Those wishing to truly test their mettle against others can initiate a duel-to-the-death mode by typing /makgora. This will prompt the receiving player to acknowledge and accept the high-stakes duel.
    • A new tracking aura will visually communicate how many duels a player has completed and survived.
  • Safeguards and Class Changes
    • Throughout the PTR, the team will be testing new safeguards aimed to minimise the effects of uncontrolled circumstances, such as flightmaster disconnects.
    • Class abilities and spells will be modified to prevent resurrection (both personal and those that can be used on other players), as well as quests that require PVP flagging and dying to progress the questline.
    • Enemies will be tethered to their respective spawn and pathing locations to prevent players from kiting them to other lower-level quest areas.

The fact that people can remain as ghosts has me laughing, because I can imagine that WoW players may well hang out as spooks for the sake of having a laugh. Items on the safeguard list also reads as a veritable highlight reel of great trials of the past, such as deaths caused by disconnects or dragging mobs far beyond their usual area to sow chaos.

The standout inclusion is absolutely the implementation of a new command – ‘/makgora‘ – as a way to kick off a high stakes player vs player duel, with the loser receiving the ultimate defeat: DEATH. Usually a World of Warcraft duel would leave the defeated player with a single hitpoint (and an embarrassing begging animation) but in the Hardcore ruleset, people can actually end the lives of their opponents. Couple this with a tracking buff that identifies how many victories a player has under their belt, a very cool new social status can be achieved.

A Public Test Realm will be deployed for players to iron outs the bugs with the ruleset, and to perhaps identify some quirks that could be used to cheat death starting June 30 – So if you want to collect some grisly trophies from fatal duels, feel free to jump on board!
