Sony has patented a PlayStation controller design that appears to be aimed at mobile gaming.
As spotted by VGC, the patented design resembles a Dualshock 4, with “a left side grip portion and a right side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user.” Between the two grips is a section that’s left free for a smartphone to fit, as well as “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion.”
While PlayStation controllers are already compatible with smartphones via Bluetooth, this design looks similar to third-party mobile gaming accessories that are currently on the market. Though this may hint at Sony wanting to move further into the mobile gaming market, it’s worth noting that patents like these don’t always result in the product being made available.
