The mid-season patch for Overwatch 2 is live, bringing with it a slew of tank changes, new challenges, and a gigantic collaboration event with the Transformers.
However, there’s one detail that wasn’t mentioned, and it has people excited for a new face to join the roster.
A space pod has landed in the Dorado map, with the occupant having long left the scene – but leaving behind a photo of themselves with darling climate scientist (and terrifying frost nightmare) Mei:

The meteor that was spotted in the sky has touched down in Dorado. It appears to have been a spacecraft housing a single seat and an image of Space Ranger and Mei!

Via Overwatch Cavalry above, we get a good look at our newcomer’s photo – known internally as ‘Space Ranger’, they were first discussed and revealed at BlizzCon 2023 alongside details for Venture. Not a great deal is known at this point, apart from the fact that Space Ranger will be a support character and that she hails from a Mars colony. During development, her weapon was described as a burst-fire SMG – but this has since been changed.
Lore-wise, she is connected to Mei and the Lucheng Interstellar company, a Chinese company specialising in the space industry that forms the basis of the Lijiang Tower map within the game. This marks the first step of her introduction beyond some developer comments – with the cool detail being that her pod is broadcasting Morse code:

It is hardly the first time Overwatch has started a new character introduction by way of in-game clues – I vividly remember when the Doomfist gauntlet was flogged a second time from the Numbani map.
It’s a great engaging way to get people talking about a new cast member, especially when there are breadcrumbs dropped to tie them into other lore pieces within the game – such as existing characters and entities.
As for when we may expect to meet Space Ranger proper, my assumption would be that Season 12 would be the ticket. Given past releases, we would be due for a character.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for additional clues!

Massive shoutouts to Overwatch Cavalry.
