A Starfield Q&A Video With Todd Howard Details The Game’s Inspiration, Dialogue And Traits

In space, no one can hear your 250,000 screams

Bethesda has released the first video of a new Constellation Questions series to answer fans’ burning questions about Starfield.

The five-minute video has Community Manager Jess Finster posing questions to Game Director Todd Howard that fans have apparently asked on Reddit, Twitter and Discord. Howard opens the discussion by saying that space trading and combat sim SunDog: Frozen Legacy and tabletop RPG Traveler were both inspirations for Starfield. Howard also talks about whether or not Starfield is a hard sci-fi game, similar to those two inspirations, to which he says that it is…and it isn’t. The narrative seemingly echoes those hard sci-fi classics. In contrast, the gameplay has been tweaked to ensure that enjoyment isn’t hampered by limitations such as harsh fuel consumption and intricate laws of physics.

The conversation then moves on to the game’s trait system, wherein every trait comes with a positive and negative perk. Howard explains in this video that the negative traits can be removed by completing “an activity or quest.” This is said to be put in place so that players can shape their character into the space-faring person they envision rather than being forced to restart the game and rebuild them if you make a choice that comes with a nasty side effect.

Lastly, Howard touches on Starfield’s dialogue system and the huge number of written lines in the game. As mentioned previously, Howard states that Starfield will be returning to “a classic Bethesda-style dialogue,” where players will need to read NPC’s facial expressions and react accordingly using a number of options. The most staggering stat provided is that Starfield contains 252,953 lines of dialogue, dwarfing the 111,000 found within Fallout 4 and the 60,000 in Skyrim. Let’s hope we still get to hear about a poor space marine’s unfortunate knee injury amongst all of those lines.
