James Stevenson, the community director at Insomniac Games has dropped a little tidbit on the social web (heh) today mentioning that the upcoming mega-sequel for Marvel’s Spider-Man is going to offer a unique middle-ground 40 FPS mode alongside the usual 30 and 60 FPS offerings.
This comes as part of a recent discussion where engineers working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 clarified that all graphical modes within the games make use of ray-tracing as a standard feature, explaining that no compromise was needed to deliver such fidelity.
30 fps, 40 fps, and 60fps. All with ray-tracing 😏 https://t.co/oH5X6ybkUr

As a gamer, it’s exciting to note that a middle ground option like this could well be a great path for all games moving forward – often games will offer a simple binary option between ‘Performance’ and ‘Fidelity’, where one is trying to blast out a blistering FPS while the other will reign it in a tad to try and be as gorgeous as possible. Personally I have long been someone that seeks the middle where I can experience the best of both worlds – and seeing something like this emerge for (initially) console-bound titles is super exciting.
In a pre-launch interview on IGN, Insomniac’s Director of Core Technology Mike Fitzgerald was quoted in regards to how seriously they take the visual aspect of such a title:
“We’ve really figured out how to deliver what we feel like is the right Spider-Man visuals and we want to make sure every player is seeing that.”
You can bet I will be marching straight into my settings tab once the game launches on October 20 to lock in my 40 FPS mode.
Will it nail the centre point of fidelity and performance? Time and player feedback will surely deliver all the details we need, but we need to try it first – and now we can.
I just wonder what term will end up being the moniker for such a mode. Performance, Fidelity and …Bit-of-both? Split the difference? Combo?
I am sure the devs will come up with a clever one. Probably “Hybrid”.
