Man, remember Warcraft III: Reforged? Some of us do. The remaster managed to deliver a high definition experience to the classic RTS – at the cost of a great many features.
That’s right, the most painful part of the Reforged saga was the fact that the original Warcraft III ceased to exist. It replaced the codebase for all people that had Warcraft III/The Frozen Throne on their account, so if people did not want to jump into the Reforged experience, they had little choice.
But, in an age where Blizzard is constantly offering classic experiences, they have seemingly added one more to their launcher – albeit very quietly.
A post appeared on the Warcraft 3 Blizzard forums today saying the following:
No fanfare, no social media posts, no buzz. Just as quick throwaway post that if you got it, you got it.
Initially the discovery was made by people on Reddit thinking that it may well be a mistake on Blizzard’s part, as if it was an accidental deploy. With the original release of Reforged removing all access to legacy clients, people were hot for something that didn’t need to be dug out of dark internet corners. It is even patch 1.29, known famously for adding proper widescreen support and a 24 player cap.
It’s a pretty solid step in a good direction, though it is still a hindered experience given that the Legacy client supports offline and LAN play only, no battle net support. If you want to get back into some oldstyle matches, you’ll either need to lug your PC to a mates place – or jump on your virtual network of choice. Remember Hamachi? I do.
So now the rumour mill is winding around again. We have a BlizzCon coming up in 2026, so what if there is a big update coming to Reforged to get it up to scratch? An apology to those that weren’t impressed, and a commitment to letting them keep the original, UNforged version?
Time will tell. For now, you’ll catch me in some old school Enfos Team Survival custom maps with all the ancient trimmings. Naturally.
