Film production company Paramount and video game publisher Activision have announced that they will partner to produce a Call of Duty movie adaptation.
The newly merged entertainment juggernaut, Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, has entered into a partnership with Activision to develop, produce, and distribute a live-action Call of Duty film, an adaptation that has seemed inevitable for years. There’s essentially no further information on the project outside of that; however, the press release promises an “authentic and exciting experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, had this to say about the partnership:
“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honour and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly. We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve. I can promise that we are resolute in our mission to deliver a cinematic experience that honours the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand – thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation.”
It used to be that all video game adaptations were trash, with Super Mario Bros, Doom, and the endless amount of Resident Evil sequels all completely misunderstanding the source material. Nowadays, with The Last of Us, Fallout, Mortal Kombat, and the Sonic series, we have a better chance of getting something passable, or even good.
That said, we’ve also endured through Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed, and Monster Hunter, in recent times, so while the odds are better, they aren’t bulletproof.
