Dark Souls Lore: Gravelord Nito

Nito sleeps deep within the Giant Catacombs, quietly overseeing all death.

Gravelord Nito (also known as Nito, First of the Dead) is one of the four beings who possesses a Lord Soul. He oversees death of all life and offered much of his very own soul to death itself. Alongside the other Lords (Gywn, the Witch of Izalith and Seath the Scaleless) he waged war on the Everlasting Dragons, letting loose a plague of death upon them.

When the fires of the war dissipated and the Age of Fire began, Nito ventured through The Catacombs and into Tomb of the Giants. It is there where he currently resides and slumbers as a keeper of his Lord Soul. Should travellers be brave enough, one can pay their respects to the slumbering Lord and even gain entry into the Gravelord Servant covenant.Nito boss fight

In a time predating that of the Chosen Undead, Nito held onto a power known as the Rite of Kindling until the Pinwheel (who resides within the deepest part of The Catacombs, on the precipice of the Tomb of the Giants) unrightfully stole the power. This stolen power was greatly sought after by Occultists whose desires were to destroy the other Lords using this power. These events are so far back in time that they are thought to be somewhere in between the Oolacile time period and the rising of the Chosen Undead. The Rite of Kindling is never returned to Nito. The Chosen Undead stumbles through to the deepest point of The Catacombs and slays the Pinwheel. Soon after that, the Chosen Undead also slays Gravelord Nito to acquire his Lord Soulwhich is required to link the fire.

Even though he is a lord of death, Nito is not actually evil. His intentions are not malevolent and he only administers death where needs be. He remains in the Tomb of the Giants to overlook all those who have already passed.
