All the way back in August of 2024 there was a short and sweet little trailer to confirm that another Darksiders game was coming.
This was enough to make a superfan like me vibrate with anticipation – but did nothing to clue me in on what we should expect. The long and curious history of Darksiders promises a particular kind of game, and this new teaser trailer for Darksiders 4 may just confirm what we have been hungering for:
Once again, it’s a shorty n’ sweet thing – not even hitting a minute long – but the subtext on display is freaking enormous. The dialogue from the original Darksiders ending plays, with the angelic warrior Uriel telling the horseman War that he is being hunted, and that he will be facing the conflict alone.
War’s response still hits as hard today as it did all those years ago: “No. Not alone.”
The trailer then comes to a close with War being joined by his brethren – as four, they ride: The Horsemen.
Darksiders as a property focuses on the actions of these four cosmic enforcers, a remixed version of the biblical “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. The reason this trailer feels exciting is because the formula for Darksiders games have been pretty obvious – which titles introducing a new member of the team and letting players see their part of the story.
- Darksiders – The horseman, War, framed for starting the apocalypse
- Darksiders II – The horseman, Death, seeking to redeem his brother’s name
- Darksiders III – The horsewoman, Fury, given a task to distract her from her brothers plight
- Darksiders: Genesis – A prequel of sorts, introducing the horseman Strife as he works with War to investigate Lucifer
While Genesis was an outlier, the thought was that each game would introduce a horseman – and that the ultimate outcome would be a game where every horseman would be present. Would it be co-op? Would it just be multi-protagonist? Who knows.
But it was absolutely a thing that was suggested and desired for as long as these games continued to exist.
And how, this teasers, calls all the way back to the first game ending – with War summoning his kin, and the four of them standing triumphantly together. It’s exciting to speculate on what comes next, but of course this is but a trailer – the proper reveal is yet to come.
So, I will wait with baited breath for the next big bit of Darksiders 4 media.
