EA Originals To Publish A Thought-Provoking Game From New Independent Studio Silver Rain

From HBO to…EAO?

Video game publishing giant Electronic Arts has announced a partnership with an up-and-coming independent development studio under the company’s EA Originals banner.

With funding and publishing support from the same program that helped birth titles like Unravel, Fe, Sea of Solitude and A Way Out, developer Silver Rain Games is currently working on an unannounced, “thought-provoking” game.

The studio is co-founded by Melissa Phillips and Abubakar Salim, and if those names sound familiar it’s likely because of Salim’s acting credits in roles such as Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins as well as a ton of television work including HBO’s Raised By Wolves. Phillips, meanwhile, has previously worked as the BAFTA Games Programme Manager for BAFTA’s Learning & New Talent Team, and so will be bringing plenty of wisdom and experience to the role of Head of Studio.

Silver Rain was formed in February 2020 and has since grown to a studio of approximately 20 staff who, impressively, are all currently working remotely.

Silver Rain Games is an independent game development studio with the intention of welcoming new audiences to the games industry.

We value flexibility and aim to create a safe space for our team to explore and find their role within the game industry of today.

In the accompanying press material Salim, Phillips and EA’s Strategic Growth EVP Matt Bilbey share their excitement over the announcement:

“In what has been a challenging year, we have assembled an extraordinarily creative and worldly team who are eager to work on projects that bring their global perspectives to life. Together we will construct an exciting universe that unlocks the power of storytelling and the brilliance that brings,” says Salim. “We couldn’t be happier to work with the EA Originals team, who are phenomenal partners for us as we begin this journey. Not only does each of them understand our vision to inspire and entertain, but they also welcome this exciting new age of game development.”

“We have spent the last year really growing our team and have some exceptionally talented people supporting us on putting this game together,” says Phillips. “I am so excited to see the team grow again and really have the opportunity to showcase the quality of the work they are creating.”

“We feel incredibly fortunate to be working with Abu, Mel and the entire team at Silver Rain,” says Bilbey. “They are a bold new independent studio who will create distinct, innovative new experiences. We look forward to supporting them on this epic adventure they are on and when the time is right, connecting them with a global audience of players.”

As our dedicated readers would be well aware, we love our indies here at WellPlayed and have been huge fans of past EA Originals titles, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on the team at Silver Rain Games to see just what it is they’re cooking up.
