Fans hoping to see the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy’s bold take on one of the most iconic video game stories of all time have been afforded some relief this week, in the form of a promise that things are moving along nicely on the project’s third and final part.
Speaking to Japan’s gaming publication giant, Famitsu, and with translation by Eurogamer, Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi and longtime series Producer Yoshinori Kitase have together suggested that the main “scenario” of the still-untitled Part 3 of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project has now been completed.
The pair added that development on the final part is progressing according to the team’s internal schedule with no delays as yet, blessing hungry players with the hope that the wait won’t be too long, but stopping short of giving us any indication of a release target or window.
In the interview, Kitase-san also revealed that Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura’s “homework” in this endeavour was to give the remake trilogy a conclusion that was both respectful of the original game and added a sense of closure and satisfaction exclusive to the new project. That goal was apparently achieved by the end of 2024, which is where the notion that the game’s overall story is now done. “I’m very satisfied with it, so I’m sure the fans will be satisfied with the final chapter,” Kitase promises.
The trilogy’s second entry, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, launched in early 2024 to critical acclaim and went on to garner dozens of end-of-year awards including multiple Game of the Year wins. A PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth debuted just this week with a suite of upgrades from overhauled lighting to higher potential resolutions and framerates, and Steam Deck support!
