Forspoken’s Second Deep Dive Video Explores The Visually-Impressive Magical Combat

Mixing magic into the melee

Publisher Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions have released the second of three deep dive videos that explore the mechanics of Forspoken, with this one focusing on the game’s magical combat.

While the first deep dive video highlighted protagonist Frey’s traversal abilities, this five-minute trailer delves into the offensive skills used to take on the various threats around the world of Athia. While battling through scores of enemies, Frey will gain access to several different elemental magic types, including purple earth-based, red fire-based, blue water-based and green magics, each with their uses and visual stylings.

Each magic type has attack, support and parkour skills to aid Frey in her fights. For instance, the earth-based purple magic features spell Shot, which quickly launches a magic-infused rock at your target; Burst Shot, which fires a cluster of explosive rocks; and Shield Shot, which creates a barrier to deflect damage before exploding outwards.

During the trailer, we also see Frey using support abilities such as Prime, which creates an explosive trap that automatically detonates when an enemy draws near, and Tendril, a sweeping stone arm that deals damage to opponents while healing Frey.

We also get to see Cuff, Frey’s magical bracelet and the source of her powers, take charge during the trailer, helping to scan the environment, block incoming damage and highlight enemy weakness.
