Heavy Rain Developer Quantic Dream Has Been Acquired By NetEase Games

A quick time acquisition

Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human has announced that Chinese tech company NetEase has acquired them.

Founded by David Cage, the French studio has always been known for its independence but, as explained in a statement on the Quantic Dream website, changing circumstances have led to the company seeking out this acquisition. As many would deduce, the main driving force behind this move is monetary, with the studio requiring additional funds to continue developing and publishing projects going forward.

“In order to continue our development and presence in the world, but also to fund other studios and become an international publisher, larger investments are needed for us to keep building our technology and infrastructure, to deliver ever more impressive next-generation games, to expand our team and to develop several projects simultaneously,” the statement reads.

Despite this acquisition, the studio will apparently retain its independence and will continue to hold the reigns on its project’s creative direction.

“To continue to evolve and dream big, as we embark on “our next 25 years”, we are delighted to announce that we will be joining NetEase Games, which is becoming a 100% shareholder of Quantic Dream. We will retain our independence in terms of our editorial line, the artistic direction of our projects and the management of the studio,” as said in the statement.

NetEase has published several games, many of which rest in the mobile space. Their publishing portfolio currently consists of titles like Naraka: Bladepoint, The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, Marvel Duel and EVE Echoes.
