Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix have shown off the first look at what’s set to be an incredibly exciting collaboration for Magic: The Gathering in 2025 with Final Fantasy.
In a teaser video that arrives as part of EVENT, Final Fantasy producer and self-proclaimed #1 Magic fan at Square Enix, Shoichi Ichikawa, and Wizards of the Coast product architect, Zakeel, dropped the first details on what fans can expect from the Magic the Gathering x Final Fantasy set.
This includes the confirmation that the set will span all numbered Final Fantasy entries from I through to XVI, which is great news for those of us who enjoy games other than Final Fantasy VII. Cards will include series staples like monsters, summons, legendary weapons, Chocobos and more and some characters already confirmed to appear include Final Fantasy VI’s Terra and Kefka, Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud and Sephiroth, Final Fantasy X’s Tidus and Yuna, Final Fantasy XIII’s Lightning, Final Fantasy XIV’s Emet and Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis.
And, of course, the video ends with a very first peek at some of the art that fans will see in the set when it launches in June next year:
According to the pair, this upcoming set will feature the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever assembled in a single game, which seems astounding when you consider that a full Final Fantasy TCG already exists – though perhaps the stipulation here is original artwork. There’ll be art both from Magic artists as well as classics and new pieces from legendary Final Fantasy illustrators.
“We believe that the combination of the epic storytelling of Final Fantasy and the strategic gameplay of Magic: The Gathering will be the most exciting entertainment ever on the table,” says Ichikawa in the video.
“The characters, the epic battles, and deeply emotional stories, everything comes together in a way that feels… magical,” adds Zakeel.
Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy collaboration set is due to release on June 13th, 2025, and no doubt we’ll have more news to come between now and then. You can find the official web page here.
