When it comes to remakes and remasters, people are always wary of what they might lose when things are “fixed”.
I know personally I felt a deep concern that the Oblivion Remastered release would axe one particular flub that has always tickled me deeply – when a voiceover line in the original title was not edited correctly, and ended up shipping out in the full release of the game.
For context, within the game players visit the Temple of the One in the Imperial City Temple District, and find Tandilwe – a Master Speechcraft trainer.
One of Tandilwe’s lines in the game is: “I heard that thieves broke into the Arcane University, the Imperial Legion Compound, and the Temple, all on the same night.”
…Only the booth session clearly saw the voice actor give that line a second go, with the re-do (and quiet expression of disappointment with the first read) still left in the game:

It is no fault of the voice actor of course, that is an editing mistake courtesy of either the audio engineer or whoever was responsible for mastering the audio for the full version release but who cares about all that, because it’s fantastic.
So fantastic in fact, that the Remaster of Oblivion has actually left the legendary gaff in the game in its full state – and even to some extent, slightly improved it:
Improved how you might ask? Well in the original game, only the initial reading of the line has lip sync. With the remaster, the entire line – dutiful request to try again, included – is fully lip synced. This makes it almost seem like Tandilwe is nervously repeating the line, in character, to the player.
Amazing stuff.
It’s efforts like these that make me a fan of remakes and remasters, because if you can’t enjoy the dorkiness of times past, what can you do?
Did you catch this incredibly funny goof in the original Oblivion release? Are you enjoying the remaster? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
