I still have not quite recovered from the shock of seeing Jason Voorhees turn up in Player First Games’ platform fighter MultiVersus – and now seeing him in action, I am oddly delighted with how faithfully he has been recreated.
I mean, he isn’t dismembering and decapitating the poor toon-folk of the game – gotta keep that rating safe for the kiddies – but he is absolutely accurate to his past cinematic exploits. I mean, they even acknowledge that one time he went to space.
Yeah, you read that right. Jason Voorhees absolutely went to space at one point.
His basic attack strings seem to weave between his most iconic cutting tools, such as his signature machete and the runner-up wood axe – but then his special moves take into account some of his coolest on screen kills. Wrap someone up in a sleeping bag, to pummel and discard like a bag of rubbish? Absolutely. The amazing “folding bed” moment from Freddy Vs. Jason? It seems to be an upward special – and it’s absolutely present and accounted for. They even reference a fun fan-canon gimmick where Jason always seems to appear from nowhere in his films, giving the big dude a misty teleport ingame.
Even cosmetically, they are more than happy to throw the incredible Uber Jason look into the game as a skin – with his cyborg upgrades straining against oddly BDSM-looking leather. It is a surprisingly robust incarnation of the misunderstood hulk, really the only thing I am yearning to see is some reference to his poor departed mother; but perhaps a disembodied lady head is a touch too far for the Bugs Bunny crowd.
It is a super cool implementation of the big lug, and does a tremendous amount to hype up fans that have long been starved for Jason content. For years now, Jason related stuff has been super stalled due to an ongoing lawsuit targeting who should be collecting the paycheques – but movement in that space recently has seen a surprising number of announcements and promises coming out – with the MultiVersus appearance being the first to really materialise and give hope that Jason is back on the scene. Maybe Dead By Daylight will be next? Or perhaps Jason will turn up somewhere else unexpected – like Fortnite.
On my end, I am just happy to see the dude getting work again.
