Kingdom Hearts Is Getting A Rhythm Game Spinoff On Consoles This Year

File this one under surprise announcements that I didn’t see coming. Publisher Square Enix has just announced that Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, a brand-new rhythm game spinoff, will be coming to PS4, Xbox One and Switch later this year.

The debut trailer shows off some of the ‘rhythm action’ gameplay, which looks about what you’d expect from a 3D take on games like Final Fantasy Theatrythm, and with the Kingdom Hearts’ series massive back catalogue of solid tunes it should be a good time. Interestingly, the second half of the trailer is quite Kairi-heavy and could almost be seen as implying that she’s a playable character. Maybe.

The trailer is only available in Japanese so far, though it does state that the game will be releasing worldwide this year. Check it out below:

Kieron started gaming on the SEGA Master System, with Sonic the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy. The 20-odd years of his life since have not seen his love for platformers falter even slightly. A separate love affair, this time with JRPGs, developed soon after being introduced to Final Fantasy VIII (ie, the best in the series). Further romantic subplots soon blossomed with quirky Japanese games, the occasional flashy AAA action adventure, and an unhealthy number of indie gems. To say that Kieron lies at the center of a tangled, labyrinthine web of sexy video game love would be an understatement.
