Netherrealm Studios has dropped a new story trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, confirming that Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka will be playable fighters, with Darrius returning as a Kameo fighter.
Debuting at San Diego Comic-Con today, the new Umgadi trailer not only shows off three new playable fighters (and Darrius), but it also gives us a few more story beats. Originally appearing in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance as a fairly generic Outworld warrior, Li Mei returns in MK1 as a banished Umgadi, a sect of warrior priestesses sworn to protect the royal family of Outworld. In the snippets of gameplay, she is shown to be a nimble fighter who wields magical abilities.
The trailer also introduces us to Tanya, who was last playable in Mortal Kombat X via the Kombat Pack. Now brandishing a staff, Tanya is a Umgadi who hasn’t been shunned, seen to be protecting Empress Milena. Far more acrobatic, Tanya commands a similar magic to Li Mei, vaguely looking like her previous fire abilities in past games.
Lastly, we have the bladed badarse, Baraka. Instead of being a Tarkatan, or toothy friend is inflicted with the Tarkatan disease in this new timeline. Slowly transforming its host into spiny savages who can’t control their anger. So, he’ll be the Baraka we all know and love. We do also catch a few glimpses of Darrius as a Kameo fighter who originally popped up in Mortal Kombat: Deception. He’s a cool dude who wears shades and is a perfect example of why the Kameo system will be so much fun for long-time fans.
