With the release of Overwatch 2: Invasion, the title is finally free of being landlocked to the Battle.net launcher.
Blizzard stated that they would be adding some of their titles to the Steam platform, with Overwatch 2 being the first to hit the Valve-maintained storefront – and oh boy, it is off to a doozy of a start.
Stats from the SteamDB website recorded an initial peak of 52,349 today, which is impressive when you consider that many Overwatch 2 players are quite at home on their Blizzard launcher.
The other incredible milestone that Overwatch 2 hit today was it’s first foray into user-driven reviews, with the Steam page showcasing a massive pit of negative reviews and endless memes:
Sir the Steam users have racked up enough time to review Overwatch 2 pic.twitter.com/ph37CZmX29

A personal favourite of mine is a review that just openly links to Team Fortress 2, a long suffering precursor of the hero shooter genre:
This fucking Steam review for Overwatch 2 is sending me LMFAOOOO pic.twitter.com/ZloQ2k8qnq

Some were humorous, others were edgy – but a large quantity of them were simply airing out the disappointment felt by many with how Overwatch 2 came to be received. A sentiment that was echoed in user-driven comments across the web, finally coming to roost in a place that is dedicated to capturing feedback.
Overwatch 2 is a sequel that’s left a lot of people scratching their heads. The transition from Overwatch 1 was confusing, and the scaling down of the PvE Hero mode didn’t help. Players still don’t quite gel with they new monetization system, especially with new heroes initially stuck behind a paywall. It’s no wonder that these reviews for Overwatch 2 are full of spice and pepper.
It’s easy to dismiss the whole ordeal as a troll-tastic exercise in review bombing, but for some this is actually an outlet to finally platform their thoughts. I’d be remiss to say I didn’t see a handful of well written paragraphs speaking of the dangers of under-delivering an experience, with many saying they hope that Overwatch 2 continues to improve and shake off it’s wobbly start.
I am personally in the camp of people that feel that the overall Overwatch 2 journey is heading in the right direction – while I have some experience with the current crop of content, I am still measuring it’s longevity and reception by others.
It really is the biggest content drop we have ever seen in Overwatch, so here’s hoping it starts a trend of redemption that everyone can enjoy.
If not, well – the Steam reviews will be endlessly entertaining for a long while.
