Overwatch’s 2026 Update Is An Enormous Refresh Of The Game, With A Huge Roster Expansion

They are also ditching the ‘2’

Blizzard is officially rebranding Overwatch 2 back to its original title, Overwatch.

This name change marks the start of a major transformation for the game, headlined by a year-long story arc and the addition of 10 new heroes throughout 2026.

Incredibly, FIVE of those heroes will be dropping at the start of the next season – which is coming sooner than you may think.

During Overwatch Spotlight, Blizzard unveiled “The Reign of Talon,” the franchise’s inaugural year-long narrative arc. This ambitious storyline follows the villainous Talon organisation’s global expansion under the new management of newcomer Vendetta and the heroic efforts of Overwatch to stop them.

The narrative will unfold over six seasons via in-game events, animated comics, shorts, and map transitions. The journey begins on February 10 with Season 1, which introduces an unprecedented five-hero lineup across both factions:

 Talon Domina  Tank
Emre Damage
Mizuki Support
Overwatch Anran Damage
Jetpack Cat Support

To help tell this emerging story, in-game events will allow players to align with either Overwatch or Talon over five weeks to compete for themed cosmetics.

The game will also receive a huge UI overhaul, seeing a massive refactor of the menu system to make navigation snappier – with the neat feature of showing your current character on the main screen. Oh, and end of game match cards are making a return …but not as cards. Instead players will see their character at the end of the game alongside an accolade, allowing participants to upvote whomever they choose. Huzzah.

Oh and if you just wanna look cute, a Hello Kitty-themed in-game collaboration will bring the incredible Sanrio characters to the game.

In the midst of these changes, Blizzard is also officially rebranding Overwatch 2 by dropping the number and referring to the game simply as Overwatch. Speaking with Developers, they described it as a refocus on what defines the game:

Overwatch is more than just a digit: it’s a living universe that keeps growing, keeps surprising, and keeps bringing players together from around the world. This year marks a huge turning point in how the development team envisions the future of Overwatch, so we are officially dropping ‘2’ and moving forward as ‘Overwatch’

Overwatch 2 had a rocky start – but it did eventually end up in a great space. It makes perfect sense that a new chapter would get a new moniker, even if it’s the classic one.

It is a spectacular amount of news, feeling almost like a proper relaunch of the game – as a 10 year celebration players are feasting. An enormous expansion to the roster, a huge refresh to the UI and a refocus on story feels like everything fans have wanted.
