Look, it feels like indie darling Stray has only been out for a hot minute, but already people are creating mods to tweak the experience more to their liking.
While the titular kitty within the title has no option to be customised, many talented people have taken the initiative to insert their very own real-life purring pal into the game – wholesome through and through. Download an Adobe Photoshop template from Nexus Mods and you can paint up your very own custom purr-tagonist!

Heck, if you are artistically challenged there is a whole range of preset cat textures by way of the Pick of the Litter mod – boasting a range of hand painted alternate textures to float your furry boat.
Or, what if you don’t want a cat at all? Because that is a thing. People have actually managed to replace the cat – with a dog.

I mean, fair enough. The term ‘Stray’ is not specifically unique to cats – a dog can absolutely be a stray also.
But then there is a much darker, much more disturbing side to Stray modding. And like so many other things in life, it was inevitable.
Introducing The CJ Mod.
I could have lived a long, enjoyable life without seeing the odd companion CJ’s with their missing textures. Thankfully, far less disturbing replacement mods are also available by way of the Garfield Mod by Chris Rubino:
Obviously these mods are sadly limited to the PC, but they are a constant reminder of how fun the gaming community can be. Cats and the internet are a fixture of our modern world, and a game like Stray serves to be the ultimate marriage of the two – so of course people want to put their spin on it.
