Scalebound Officially Cancelled

Four years work down the drain

Microsoft has today confirmed that the highly-anticipated PlatinumGames developed upcoming Microsoft exclusive Scalebound has been cancelled. Speaking to IGN, a Microsoft representative gave the following statement regarding the cancellation:

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences

Earlier this morning multiple sources including Kotaku and Eurogamer reported that several sources had revealed that the development of the game was troubled and may end up being cancelled. Sadly as it turns out these reports were on the money. It is unknown whether PlatinumGames or Microsoft will retain ownership of the IP, meaning the future of the IP is well and truly clouded.

Scalebound was first revealed at E3 in 2014 and has since suffered several delays and setbacks. Its last public appearance was at Gamescom 2016, where it failed to impress the hearts and minds of the WellPlayed team. However, the concept was intriguing and Platinum has an excellent track record (TMNT aside), so we had faith that the final build would deliver a typical quality Platinum experience. Alas that is not to be the case, and now we’ll never have the chance to ride a dragon whilst cranking the latest Skrillex banger on our Beats-inspired headphones.
