Sonic 3 has been running its paces at theatres for the last few weeks and in the wake of such success, series director Jeff Fowler has taken to social media to drop some fun behind-the-scenes looks at some concepts that were explored prior to the films plot getting nailed down.
Joyfully, instead of lamenting lost opportunities or missing characters from the original design, we get a hideously high-definition look at the defeated Robotnik’s original lair of self-loathing, located in Mexico:
Fun #SonicMovie3 fact... in an early version of the story, Robotnik and Stone hid out in Mexico. To keep tighter story pacing, we decided to eliminate the change of location and stage the first meeting with Team Sonic in Tokyo! The film was always going to address how Robotnik took his second defeat – but the location was clearly flexible. Jeff mentions that pacing for the story demanded that the lair of lounging take place in the mobile Badnik crab, so as to be closer to the narratives location at the time that Team Sonic needed to get reacquainted with the egg-head.
It’s also fun to see the missed gag of Agent Stone refuelling the giant mecha-crustacean.
Another earlier post was shared showing how the two Robotnik’s may have appeared while infiltrating a key location within the film, again showing how exceptional the concept art for the film is:
Double your VILLAINS, double your FUN!! Here's an early piece of #SonicMovie3 concept art we created to showcase the idea of two Robotniks breaking into G.U.N. headquarters! pic.twitter.com/shUlDbiSAh

Given the quality and joy from Jeff and the team behind these films, it’s clear that the Sonic movie franchise always had the potential to delight and entertain. Even now, there is a war raging on the internet to prove that Sonic 3 is actually beating out the latest Disney ‘live-action’ thing, Mufasa, as far as gross goes – so audience goers are very clued in to what they like.
Sonic 3 is in cinemas now. And it is very good.
