Sony Interactive Entertainment Wins Top Gong In Metacritic’s 2023 Game Publisher Rankings

Which publishers had a 2022 to remember?

Sony Interactive Entertainment may have missed out on the coveted Game of the Year award (both Geoff Keighley’s and WellPlayed’s), but the company has taken home another high-profile award – the number one position in Metacritic’s Game Publisher Rankings for 2023.

The aggregate site announced the results last night, which are based on games released in 2022 and the critical reception of those games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment finished with a Metacritic average of 85.6 thanks to critical darlings Horizon Forbidden West (88), the PC port of 2018’s God of War (93) and God of War Ragnarök (94). The company’s lowest rating came from MLB The Show 22 scoring 77.

Second place went to Paradox Interactive which was led by the console release of Crusader Kings III and Victoria 3. Rounding out the top three was Activision Blizzard.

The biggest movers were Focus Entertainment, which jumped from 17th in 2022 to fourth this year and Take-Two Interactive (27th to fifth). While the biggest sliders were Bandai Namco (seventh to 24th) and Ubisoft (19th to 38th). Despite winning the award in 2022, Microsoft did not qualify as did not meet the required game amount threshold. Though it’s worth remembering that is based on games released in 2022.

The top 10 for 2023 is as follows:
