South Of Midnight Has Received Its First Gameplay Trailer And It’s Looking Excellent

Compulsion’s next title is looking very promising

Developer Compulsion Games has released the first gameplay trailer for its upcoming title, South of Midnight, coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025.

Debuting as part of this morning’s Xbox Games Showcase, the four-minute trailer gave us a glimpse at the game’s movement, platforming, combat, and otherworldly southern setting. Following protagonist Hazel and the smooth-talking Catfish as they wade through the newly created swamp, courtesy of a devastating hurricane, we’re introduced to a number of folklore-inspired creatures, such as the enormous albino alligator, Two-Toed Tom, that hunts the adventuring duo.

Later in the trailer, we see Hazel duke it out with a Haint, the game’s primary enemy type, utilising several combat abilities to “unravel” and defeat the beast. Combat looks a little simplistic and safe in this first look, but the designs and animations during the brief encounter are awesome. Using her “weaving” powers, Hazel glides and grapples through the swamp to a run-down church, only to be attacked by the island-sized gator, narrowly escaping to safety.

When South of Midnight was revealed during the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, I was immediately taken by its style and tone, but it was hard to get invested off the back of a cinematic. Thankfully, after watching it in action, I can be more comfortable in my excitement. A third-person action-adventure title is a far cry from Compulsion’s previous works, including We Happy Few, so I’m very curious to see more from South of Midnight.

South of Midnight is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025.
