Steam Users Are Not Pleased With The Last Of Us Part I’s PC Release

Porting problems

No longer a PlayStation exclusive, The Last of Us Part I launched on PC today, though its release has been far from smooth.

The much-lauded remake of the original smash hit game was, until today, a PlayStation exclusive, so it’s understandable why a PC port would generate a fair amount of excitement. The HBO show pulled in huge ratings, and the remake has garnered excellent reviews on PS5 (we gave it a 9), so those looking to finally play the game on PC have been chomping at the bit to experience Joel and Ellie’s story for themselves.

Well, if Steam user reviews are anything to go by, that excitement has been somewhat tarnished.

Looking at the game’s Steam page, Part I is currently sitting on a “Mostly Negative” user review status from over 4,000 posted opinions. The overwhelming majority of the negative reviews are based on the game’s performance, with most users stating that the port is poorly optimised. The review listed as being “most helpful” states that the game suffers from a “general lack of optimisation,” while another user unloads with, ” [The] game takes more than 8 gigs of VRAM on medium settings, 100% CPU utilization in [the] menu. And the temps are really high too. Probably going to refund soon.”

While rough performance is the common thread in most of the scathing reviews, another common complaint stems from the game’s propensity to crash. One of the highlighted reviews states that the game “crashes every 20 minutes,” with another user documenting 14 crashes in their four hours of playing the game.

Obviously, this is far from ideal, but developer Naughty Dog has responded to the negative reactions, stating in a Tweet that “we’ve heard your concerns, and our team is actively investigating multiple issues you’ve reported.”
