The Internet Is Loving Tears Of The Kingdom’s Fusion Mechanic

We’re all engineers now

So this morning we were treated to a gameplay demonstration for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where it was revealed that Link has definitely learned a few new tricks for his latest title.

In typical Nintendo fashion, the main hook of the game is a familiar mechanic that has been distilled down to it’s purest form and implemented in an intuitive and fun way. That mechanic? Stickin’ things together to make new, original things.

A stick and a boulder? That is now a hammer buddy. Gluing logs together and slapping some fans on the back? Ghetto airboat. It’s a brilliantly fun mash-up of things like GMOD and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Remember that?) but it culminates in a feverishly high level of potential for players to over-engineer all manner of solutions to in-game problems.

Of course, the internet has entered a frenzy over how deliciously meme-able the entire premise is:

I am also personally thrilled to see a classic Dave the Barbarian meme, remade and remastered for a whole new audience:

I was originally lukewarm on Tears of the Kingdom, not for any particular reason – mostly because I have had two kids since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out, so games promising a lengthy epic adventure are carefully approached nowadays. But this? The ability to do digital arts and crafts to make whacky weapons and madcap machines? This changes everything! I can now claim that the children are helping me within the game as supervising engineers!

Thank you Nintendo, this will do nicely.
