Vox Populi – Here’s What You Thought of Far Cry 5

The people have spoken

As a gaming journalist it’s easy to become a little bit cynical at times. For instance, contributor Jordan Garcia can’t witness a framerate drop without clenching his fists in righteous anger, and Editor-in-Chief Kieran Stockton believes that every time a game less than five years old gets a remaster a fairy loses its wings and dies. But are these the things that truly matter to our readers? With Vox Populi we want to give our readers the chance to tell us what they think of a title, free of the cynicism borne from reviewing one game too many as a quasi-semi-part-time-moderate-to-regular-half-strength-no-froth-not-for-profit games journalist. Whenever a big title releases we’ll run a post on our social channels asking for your opinion, and we’ll post the tastiest morsels here. So go on, have your vox heard.

Our first foray with Vox Populi is all about the recently released Far Cry 5 from Ubisoft. Yours truly rated it a stellar 9 out of 10 in our review, stating the following:

It’s the same Far Cry you’ve come to know and love, with the refined gameplay mechanics and the exceptionally compelling antagonists ensuring that Far Cry 5 is an insanely fun and addictive experience, and one that will no doubt be contending for one of the best releases this year

But enough about us and more about you. Let’s find out what the people thought of Far Cry 5. Was I right in calling it the best Far Cry yet? Or was it more of the same? We let the people get their vox off.

Jake Dobbie: I was hesitant heading into Ubisoft’s newest entry into the Far Cry Series. I didn’t know much about it other than the handful of new features that were advertised. But having spent over 10 hours so far in the game it has easily become one of my favorite games of 2018, its exploration is fun and never feels like a chore, whether it’s wingsuiting across Montana and spotting a cool looking building or driving through the forest in what can only be described as the America mobile this game has a whole lot to offer.

Lachlan Robertson: Easily one of the best Ubisoft IP games in recent year’s that is not an Assassin’s Creed game, I have loved Far Cry since the beginning and I have played 1,2,3 and Blood Dragon but skipped on 4 and Primal, it does get a little bit repetitious at times but the overall experience of the game is fantastic, I can totally see why WellPlayed lord calls it a bloody ripper because ho boy… it really is.

Jayden Williams: Hollow story that fails to live up to its potential. This said, the game systems in place make exploration and general gameplay rewarding and fun. The game world is exciting and always has something to do. The variety of the missions is nice, from what I’ve seen.

Danielle Winterburn: Not as good as 3 and 4, new map sucks, plants and animals are harder to find. but I do like the new perk system, Prepper stash missions and the Fangs for Hire companions are pretty rad, especially Cheeseburger.

Connor Simpson: A really good Far Cry game best in the series to be exact recommend 100%.

Daniel Markiewicz: In the latest faux political message title from the folks at Ubisoft you find yourself annihilating your fellow Americans in a quest for something vaguely representing the perverse American justice system. Eventually frustration builds as you get forced to endure cutscenes best described as inspired by that “torture bit in GTA 5″ that ACA ran a story about weekly years ago.  8/10, gameplay found it’s way, shame it didn’t get a political compass done right.

Justin Currie-Smith: It’s a first-person Just Cause 3 with Breitbart readers rather than South American dictators as the antagonists.

Luke Greene: Alrighty then…..! Here are my thoughts on it. The perk system is great, but at the same time I realised it was a bit of a cop out. Back in the other games you had to earn such things as heavy take downs or aerial tack downs and other certain things along those lines, because of this I felt that this gave the ability to shadow the perk requirements of being harder to get due to the high perk cost and also the sorta useless and sorta unnecessary perks for example the ammo increases not really been needed unless if your someone that Rambos for 6 hours exploring without realising that restocking and selling loot would be a good idea and isn’t hard to achieve when you can fast travel to a location where a gun Smith is. Another issue I had was with the implementation of the new challenges and rewards system where instead of these being a fun little added bonus it seemed more mandatory to do to be able to be rewarded the perk points to be able to use and increase your character with, overall it was more of a chore than it was a fun mechanic, plus not helping anyone by locking one of the challenges behind a requirement that you would have to play with a friend in coop for 60 minutes and with the added feature that you could only play coop with friends and the game not having matchmaking puts this challenge out of view for those who don’t have any friends with this game….. cough!…. cough….! Forever alone….The non-implementation of the crafting bags and loot bag upgrades from the other games (might I say was such a fun feature) really took away from the explorations and hunting mechanic of the game, also really taking away from the fear factors of scary animals knowing that you could honestly avoid them because knowing that you don’t really need their super nice pelt to upgrade your super fabulous nice loot bag because you totally bought it with stupid non-fabulous perk points… 🤧 (yes you do get perk points from challenges that require you to kill some of the animals, but it’s just not the same) also not hearing “oh no eaaagle” and fearing for your life was another. Having a companion was pretty fun and was a good new addition that came in primal. The land scenery and land layout were great, and travel mechanics where also implemented really well from the little mechanic or if you fast travelled to another location while in a car you would arrive still in that car. Arcade was a fun feature where you could build and also play other players creations builds no complaints there. The overall story was very interesting and like most far cry games it tested your moral compass and realisation timer making you have to feel bad for every choice you thought was right….. that’s right your a horrible person…. oh! And the tripping balls on drugs scenarios where amazing still in this. Overall I would rate this game a good 7.154278/10 because it still had good features and mechanics in the end but because Uber soft dropped the ball in some spots they lost brownie points!

Well there you have it, the people have spoken. Stay tuned for the next Vox Populi opportunity to have your voice heard.
