Yakuza 7 Gets Release Info And Interesting Gameplay Details

A new chapter, a new direction

Straight off the exciting announcement of the Yakuza Remastered Collection, Ryu Ga Gotoku have officially shared details about the next title in the Yakuza series, including a release date (for Japan at least).

Yakuza 7: Whereabouts Of Light And Darkness (title as translated by Google translate) is the first main line Yakuza game that doesn’t focus on the stoic Kazama Kiryu, instead our main protagonist is Kasuga Ichiban. As part of a Tojo tertiary group, Ichiban is asked to take the fall for crimes he didn’t commit. In doing so he spends 18 years in prison and after he is released, he finds no one waiting for him and Kamurocho dominated by the police and the Omi (a Kansai region Yakuza group). The story looks to follow the events of Ichiban and those around him.

The game will be set in Yokohama (a first for the series) and will leave its tried and trust beat ’em up combat behind it exchange for real time turn-based JRPG fights. It’s gonna be weird playing a Yakuza game where I can’t just throw bicycles at enemies on a whim, but taking the series in a new direction could do a lot for expanding the audience interested in the game.

Yakuza 7 will release on January 16, 2020 in Japan with a western release currently scheduled for late 2020.
