16 Minutes Of RoboCop: Rogue City Looks Stiff And Robotic (By Design)

I prefer to serve justice cold

Sixteen bullet-soaked minutes of RoboCop: Rogue City gameplay have been released into the wild, showcasing exactly what to expect from the newest entry into the life of Officer Murphy, Deceased.

The gameplay is so at odds with what to expect from a modern shooter – somehow channelling some seriously retro energy. It’s going to be a polarising experience for those that perhaps spend their time wall-running and sliding into the shins of enemies while blasting bullets in every direction, but for those of us that want to robotically punch the top half of a criminal into a soggy mess – it’s going to be lit.

An interesting detail that has been gleaned from the footage includes the use of particular surfaces to ricochet your bullets into an enemy – at one point Robo aims at a ceiling panel to ping a barrage of rounds into the noggin of one unfortunate dork.

There is also the most awkward wall-breach I have ever seen in a videogame – with the elbow of our cyborg friend lightly tapping some cracked concrete and then emerging from the smoke to bullet-time perforate every criminal scumbag on the other side. It looked decidedly unfinished, and may well be improved by the final release – but hoo-boy, those concrete chunks sure forgot about physics for a moment.

A few moments of police work are also present, talking with other officers on the scene and working to defuse a bomb; so you are not just dispensing hot lead the entire time.

It looks and feels, unequivocably, like a RoboCop experience. Every bit as weird and awkward as it was 36 years ago, I can only hope that it can somehow channel the same charm and oozing satire that elevated the film to make the game a brilliant entry into the Robo-mythos.

The entire game evokes a feeling of nostalgia, which is already a good start. Maybe the simple joy of feeling like an 80s cyborg cop will be all it needs to succeed.

How did you find the RoboCop gameplay demonstration? Is it up to your speed? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
