An unannounced Mario Kart game has been briefly teased during the Nintendo Switch 2 first-look trailer.
Granted, we got the Deluxe version on the Switch; it’s been 11 long years since the release of the last mainline Mario Kart game. Even with the re-release, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on the Switch in 2017, so fans of the series have been beyond patient.
That’s what makes the tiny glimpse of a new Mario Kart title during the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer so damn exciting. Once the first look had gone through all of the bells and whistles that the console and Joy-Cons are rocking, we got a few seconds of a yet-to-be-announced Mario Kart game running on the system in handheld and docked mode. I’ll level with you, there’s very little to go on at this point, but I do have a few quick things to point out.
Racing on a desert track, we see a handful of characters, with Mario leading the pack, obviously. While it’s not a drastic change, the character models do look slightly different to Mario Kart 8, having an almost chibi quality to them. The more interesting blink and you’ll miss it detail flies by right at the start, with the racers launching away from the line. It could be nothing, but there are 24 starting positions behind the line, hinting at an increased maximum player count.
