April 2025’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

One for fans of movies from the 70s and 80s

The games included in the monthly PlayStation Plus refresh often feel like a jumbled mix of genres thrown together to please a wider audience without any real thought of cohesion. And then you’ve got April 2025. Last month was one of the aforementioned blender approaches, with Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection rounding out the offerings, but this next bunch has some connective tissue.

As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, April’s 70/80s IP-inspired PlayStation Plus Essentials games are RoboCop: Rogue City, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory. These three games will be available for download on April 1.

Instead of fundamentally changing the character like a particular remake did, Rogue City sticks closely to the vision of the original 1987 film. Playing as walking tank Alex Murphy, players aren’t running and gunning like any other first-person shooter. Instead, they are methodically clomping around in RoboCop’s steel boots, exacting justice with his Auto-9 pistol and generally being a mechanical badarse. Dipping into the RPG territory, Rogue City also has you investigating crimes, scrubbing scenes for evidence and interacting with citizens while you patrol the streets. Rogue City is a faithful adaptation, set between the second and third movies, and it’s one you should absolutely check out.

Completing the ’70s and ’80s film icons tag team is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Like many horror franchise adaptations before it (rest in peace, Friday the 13th), this one is an asymmetric multiplayer title in which a group of four terrified teenagers attempt to escape from the gruesome Sawyer family. Being that they are just that, a family, the teens won’t be faced with just one opposing player but three. One player will don the horrific mask of Leatherface, wielding his trusty chainsaw. At the same time, the other two horror villains embody other family members that act more as a support system for the lumbering Leatherface. Teamwork in the family, how lovely. While there are a few out and about these days, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the better asymmetric horror games out there, which is why we gave it a solid 7.5 in our review.

Alright, so this one is the outlier for the month, but variety is a good thing. Cyber Sleuth is a turn-based RPG that will see you raising and battling over 320 Digimon as you traverse both the real and digital worlds. When you’re not battling Mons, you’ll uncover mysteries and make decisions that will change both realities. I feel like you’re either a massive Digimon fan or you’re not fazed by it at all, so this one will likely appeal to that first demographic.

If you haven’t downloaded Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, you have until March 31 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
