Just a few short days ago we got to experience the Borderlands 4 character gameplay trailer for Rafa the Exo-Soldier, the cool as ice Spanish dude who is remarkably chipper for a guy who could die at any moment.
The one thing we lamented from that release is that Rafa didn’t get his own narrative-driven short like Vex did, but just today that wrong has been right(ed) – with the release of the official character short for Rafa titled “Y.O.L.T”:
Giving us a comprehensive breakdown of just how shitty Tediore is as a company, Rafa’s introduction to the mercenary/vault hunter lifestyle includes:
- Helping develop lifesaving technology that allows people like him to survive in regular gravity environments
- Discovering that the technology is too expensive for the company to even consider selling
- Watching everyone who contributed to the project die
- Realising that the very suit that keeps him alive can instead be used to remote control his corpse once he has died in the name of corporate “savings”
But hey, Rafa is a resourceful guy and got out of that shitty situation. Y.O.L.T is explained to mean you only live twice, which is sorta relevant given that he was dead to rights.
It just further cements that in a reality when super-powered turbo witches exist as player characters, the person who “just had a shitty day” will always speak to my soul.
What a great short.
What do you think of Rafa’s incredible backstory? Are the savings worth it? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
