Bye Sweet Carole Is A Hand Drawn Horror Ode To Classic Disney Animation

Carole in wonderland

Developer Little Sewing Machine has unveiled a new cinematic trailer for its upcoming horror title Bye Sweet Carole at this year’s Guerrilla Collective Showcase. Helmed by Remothered developer Chris Darril, Bye Sweet Carole is a stunning, hand-drawn ode to the classical animation stylings of Disney with a healthy dose of Darril’s signature Italian horror inspirations. We’ve had our eye on the game since early last year but now it has finally found a publisher in French operation Just For Games, and a tentative 2024 release date.

Bye Sweet Carole will whisk players away to the world of Corolla and into the shoes of Lana Benton, a young woman pursued by nightmarish creatures as she tries to solve a missing person case. Following letters and clues left behind by a mysterious figure, Lana is compelled to find out what happened to a 19th-century orphan Carole Simmons, an investigation that propels her into a world of magical realism, portals, and a load of rabbits. Much like the Remothered games before it, Darril has again drawn on classic horror inspiration points ranging from the likes of Clock Tower to Argento, but with Bye Sweet Carole he has reworked these elements with a striking, hand-drawn Disney animation aesthetic.

The game will see Lana encounter an array of characters who feel ripped from the anals of animation history while engaging in 2D levels that require puzzle solving, stealth, and exploration via the game’s core shapeshifting mechanic. Lana will be able to turn into a rabbit throughout the game, utilising different forms to engage with the world and ideally solve the mystery.

It’s gorgeous to look at and Darril’s track record with ambitious, if messy, horror games makes this one to keep an eye on when it launches on PC and all major consoles next year.
