Diablo IV Has Two Expansion Currently In The Works

More heaven and hell are on the horizon

Blizzard’s Rod Fergusson has revealed that there are two expansions for the recently-released Diablo IV in active development.

Speaking with Kinda Funny Games recently on their Xcast podcast, Diablo Producer Rod Fergusson talked pretty openly about the game’s development, launch and positive critical reception. Touching on the game’s plans for the future, Fergusson says, “The launch of Diablo IV is not the end; it’s the beginning.”

Expanding on that sentiment, Fergusson touched on the game’s upcoming seasons, saying that “[Diablo IV will have] very rich seasons, much richer than we have in Diablo III, although the Diablo III seasons are great.” He casually mentions that expansions will also be coming to the game, but it’s when he circles back to that point later in the chat that justifies the headline.

When discussing the sustainable work practices that are going into Diablo IV’s continued development, Fergusson explains that content is being created in tandem, stating that “We have to build things in parallel. Right now, as I sit here, we’re about to launch the main game, we’re finishing up season one, we’re working on season two, we’re working on expansion one, we’re kicking off expansion two. All that’s happening right now.”

Of course, we knew that the newest entry into the beloved action RPG would more than likely receive an expansion, but the fact that we will be getting more than one is noteworthy. The original Diablo had the Hellfire expansion, Diablo II featured Lord of Destruction, and, of course, Diablo III had the excellent Reaper of Souls post-launch content. Still, none of these previous games received a second major DLC.

Diablo IV has only been in the player’s hands for a few days at this point, so it’s probably going to be some time before we hear about either of these expansions, but it’s exciting nonetheless. We have been loving Diablo IV, saying in our review that “Diablo IV is a must-play for fans of the series and newcomers alike. It invites you to lose yourself in a world of darkness and embark on a thrilling journey filled with relentless battles, captivating storytelling, and a hauntingly beautiful audio-visual symphony. Just ignore the extraneous limb reaching for your wallet.” We gave it an 8.5.
