Seriously, who the hell is Volvy? This isn’t a beloved mascot; Devolver is lying to us; they’re trying to trick us into…
Happy birthday, Volvy. I can’t believe it’s been 15 years already. It feels like it was only yesterday when those catchy advertisements and tie-in games were all the rage. Ahhh, good times. Well, what better way to celebrate the big-mitted mascot than with a Devolver Direct, filled with new announcements and long-awaited release information? It was announced ahead of time that this Devolver Direct was to be a 20-minute showcase, so get yourself a slice of cake, it’s time to see what presents we’re unwrapping.
Here are all of the announcements made during the June 2024 Devolver Direct:
Tenjutsu
When a trailer kicks off with “from the designer of Dead Cells,” you know to sit up and pay attention. Set within a neon-lit city filled with crime and corruption, Tenjutsu is a roguelike brawler that challenges the player to master brutal martial arts techniques strengthened by a variety of weapons and upgrades. The reveal trailer gives us a good look at the awesome pixel art style, as well as the fast and meaty combat that promises to deepen as you master new skills. It’s very early doors, but the one-man team of Sébastien Benard has some bangers to his name, so it’s one to keep an eye on. Tenjutsu will be coming to PC and consoles, we just don’t know when yet.
Possessors
We’ve already had a fresh announcement from one acclaimed developer, so why not make it two in a row? In the works by the fine folks at Heart Machine (the team behind Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash), Possessors is an action platformer with a visual style that will grab your attention and keep it hostage. Dual protagonists Luca and Rehm find themselves begrudgingly wording together as they traverse through a dilapidated city that was torn apart by an interdimensional incident. Featuring gorgeous backdrops and hand-drawn and animated characters, Possessors looks and sounds like an absolute winner. We need to be patient and wait, as this one is set to launch on PC and consoles in 2025.
Cult of the Lamb – Unholy Alliance
Cult of the Lamb fan rejoice, your flock is set to grow once again. The new Unholy Alliance update is on the way, bringing with it a new playable character in the Goat. This horned hero doesn’t just look as cute as the familiar lamb, but they also bring with them a whole new way to play. The Unholy Alliance update is introducing local co-op, allowing a friend to jump into the fray as the Goat, as you both tend to your cult and seek out danger and adventure. The update also brings with it a range of new tarot cards, relics, buildings, fleeces, and follower quests for current and new players to enjoy. The free update is hitting PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and PC on August 12.
The Talos Principle 2: Road to Elysium
More mind-blending puzzles are on the way in the form of paid DLC for The Talos Principle 2. Road to Elysium is a three-part expansion that will undoubtedly test your mental mettle while sending you to new and exotic locations. Rejoining with 1K, the Orpheus Ascending chapter will focus on Hypatia and Sarabhai and will take place in an Egyptian-inspired area, while the Isle of the Blessed is set on a Caribean island, where you will encounter Yaqut, Miranda, Cornelius and Athena as you puzzle about. Lastly, Into the Abyss promises to be a truly difficult challenge as you delve into what happened to Byron while he was stuck in the Megastructure. This trio of DLC dips is on its way to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on June 14.
Anger Foot
If you don’t have Anger Foot on your must-play list, then go, read our recent preview, then mark July 11 on the calendar because we finally have a release date. The release date trailer also gives us a look at some of the absurd abilities you can unlock and employ, which, let me tell you, are insanely fun. Anger Foot is kicking its way onto PC on July 11.
Crush House
I’ll admit it, I hadn’t heard of The Crush House until this morning, but this trailer certainly got my attention. Dubbed a thirst-person shooter, Crush House has you filming and producing your own 1999 reality TV show, complete with drama and steamy moments. Putting together a cast and capturing all of their juicy movements is your job as a producer, but there’s more going on behind the scenes; there’s a mystery afoot. Whether you’ve been looking forward to it or you’re new to the game, like me, The Crush House is hitting PC on August 9.
Amidst the usual Devolver craziness, we got four brand-new reveals and two release date announcements, which sure sounds like a party to me. Hopefully Volvy had a great day, he and his big arm deserve it.
