This morning brought one of the first major digital showcase events for the June “Summer of Gaming” season, giving us a brand-new and lengthy PlayStation State of Play dedicated (mostly) to third party and PlayStation partner titles, with stacks of new trailers and reveals.
One of those reveals was a long-awaited release date announcement for Baby Steps, an original new title from the all-star indie team of Gabe Cuzillo, Maxi Boch (APE OUT) and Bennett Foddy (QWOP, Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy). Baby Steps is set to stroll out into the world on September 8, 2025 for PS5 and PC.
In case you’ve somehow not encountered this bizarre and beautiful work before, Baby Steps sees players take on an extraordinary trek up a mountain-sized mountain as Nate, who they control one foot at a time with physics-based walking. Given its pedigree, this promises to be equal parts frustrating and hilarious, and the game’s press release spruiking things like “fully dynamic onesie soilage system” and “non-collectible hats” is probably a testament to that.
It’s also being published by the folks over at Devolver Digital, so you know it’s going to be weird.
Take a look at the new release date trailer for Baby Steps below and you’ll hopefully see what I mean:
From the trailer description:
Baby Steps tells the story of Nate, an unemployed failson with nothing going for him, until one day he discovers a power he never knew he had… putting one foot in front of the other.
Explore a world shrouded in mystery one step at a time as Nate makes human connections more extraordinary than he could ever have imagined. Hike the serene mountains by placing each footstep yourself, in original physics-based gameplay from the minds behind Ape Out and Getting Over It. Take in the sights, fall in love with the local fauna, and try to find meaning in a wasted life.
Is Baby Steps something you’re keen for or are you not willing to put one foot in front of the other? Sound off in the comments below or over on social media!
