Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI went live this morning, confirming that the standard edition of the game will cost $129.95.
Ok, there’s a bit to dive into here.
Firstly, as detailed last week, pre-orders for GTA VI have gone live across digital storefronts and retailers like EB Games, JB Hi-Fi, and the other usual suspects. The Standard Edition of the game will set you back $129.95, which is a lot of cheese, but the Ultimate Edition, which is exclusively available on digital storefronts, will sting you even more, running you $159.95. If you’re one of the many who would prefer a physical copy of the game, please keep in mind that it will be a good old code-in-a-box, with no disc included. The bright side, if there is one, is that this distribution method will allow you to preinstall the game on November 12, ready for the game’s November 19 release date. The downside is feeling a bit like a fool as you walk into EB at 9am to pick up a numerical unlock code from a case with a disc slot for a disc that doesn’t exist.
What does the Ultimate Edition come with to justify the additional cash, I hear you ask? I’m glad you brought that up.
The GTA VI Ultimate Edition includes:
- Vehicles
- Jason’s safehouse vehicles
- Ganado Retro Build – mods for vehicles
- ’95 Grotti Cheetah – car
- Shitzu Squalo – boat
- ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy – car with garage
- Classic Car Collection – In-world cars to be found and restored
- Weapons
- Personalised variants for both Jason and Lucia
- Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers
- Cosmetics
- Vice City Style – various outfits, tattoos, and hairstyles
- Goodtime Gear – various outfits, tattoos, and hairstyles
- Storefronts/locations
- Rideout Customs – car mods
- Sara’s Unisex Salon – hairdresser
- Stock 305 – clothing
- Electric Fang Tattoo tattoo parlour
- One-Eyed Willie’s – car mods
- PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store – compound
Weapons, sure, vehicles, ok, but storefronts being limited to a specific edition? Umm, nah. Granted, this essentially means that you’ll get extra cosmetics but with added steps, but something about it feels…off. Maybe it’s to do with the immersive sim aspect that comes with modern GTA titles, and how immersion-breaking it’ll be to have some shops just not accept you because you didn’t fork out the extra real-world cash. I don’t know, it’s all a bit meh if you ask me.
GTA VI releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
