Holy Crap, Mortal Kombat 1 Includes Audio Descriptive Fatalities For The Blind

Like an audiobook – just bloodier

So the Mortal Kombat 1 pre-order beta is upon us, and bloodshed abounds for all.

But hidden in the menus are some super neat accessibility options, providing a greater level of control for those that need them. These range from navigation assistance for menus, colour blindness toggles and thresholds – to the option for ‘Descriptive Audio’ when viewing cutscenes, fatalities and more.

For anyone familiar with descriptive audio, essentially a separate voice over works to explain what is happening on screen – almost like a radio play. In the realm of tv or film, this would mean that a narrator would work alongside the dialogue to keep you up to speed on what is physically occurring.

In the case of a Mortal Kombat game, this is a whole different kettle of fish.

While the novelty of hearing a calm ladies voice describe such hideous bloodshed is not lost on a long time fan – this is a massive step by NetherRealm Studios to ensure that the Mortal Kombat experience does not alienate their visually impaired fans. One such fan is an amazing bloke by the name of SightlessKombat – who has had some stellar success in the beta so far and will likely go on to have a wild time when the game fully releases.

This all comes thanks to a gang of deadset legends who have been working as Accessibility Consultants alongside NetherRealm Studios, broadening the horizons of what can be achieved in the gaming sphere for every audience.

While gaming as a landscape continues to evolves, a lot of the most obvious advancements have become a great deal more incremental. Graphic fidelity seems to wow people in small quantities – and gameplay innovation can be a narrow trickle at time. But one thing that is absolutely popping OFF at the moment is accessibility options – and seeing the giant strides coming out of the industry is super exciting.

There is word that a showcase of these radical features will happen during the beta period, so feel free to check out @KHRattlehead across social media for more info if you want to appreciate their hard work in action.
