Look, I am very keen for Mortal Kombat 1. I am fiendishly enjoying every little snippet of information that bubbles to the surface from people experiencing the game at something as cool as Gamescom – like how my robo-boy Cyrax is back to blowing up the world, because why not.
But one thing that I wasn’t hungry for, was a big ol’ narrative spoiler in the form of a leaked screenshot that graced my eyeballs this morning. I was mid sip on my morning coffee, when a post in the Twitter/X feed screamed it’s way into my viewport.
At first, I wondered if it was the cunning work of AI – or perhaps some screenshot Deep-fakery, but alas, no. This appears to be the real deal, and it’s something I would have much rather discovered organically when playing the game.
You may be reading this article now, desperately wanting to know what I saw. Well bad luck, I am not one to propagate the information – but it is on the internet, so I am sure if you are desperate to know you are more than capable of finding out.

In the grand scheme of things, the Mortal Kombat series is not exactly a masterclass in narrative and storytelling. The pulpy, often bloody world is populated by figures that act and look like action figures – with the plot development often equated to a child slamming the toys together at random intervals. But one that thing that Mortal Kombat always manages to deliver on, is character reveals and relationship twists. Always fun, usually surprising – so having that taken away from me at this time is a bit of a bummer.
So if you are scooting through the interwebs on this fine day, and in the lead up to MK1’s full release – be wary of a dive kick that will slam you right in the spoiler zone. In fact, allow me to share my own fabricated spoiler so you can instead enjoy some fakery:
Cyber Onaga retrieves Shinnok’s amulet, and with it manages to raise Scorpion’s massacred family from the dead. Teaming up with Kano, the Mortal Kombat champions of EarthRealm mount a desperate gambit to defeat the Dragon King in a game of Uno – before the deadly alliance of Meat and Mokap take the amulet for themselves.
There you go. Let’s call that the real spoiler.
Avoid the real one at your own leisure.
