Mortal Kombat 1’s Krypt Replacement May Have Just Been Leaked

Something different of the Invasion persuasion…

While the reveals of Mortal Kombat 1 content have been far from lacking, one interesting factoid that has yet to be resolved is how players may be unlocking in-game goodies. Historically players would step foot into a special game mode known as ‘The Krypt’, usually portrayed as an interactive maze where you would exchange currency for unlockable nifties, like alt costumes or fatalities.

Ed Boon has already made mention of the newest game moving away from this system, but has remained silent on what may be replacing it. What he did state, however, is that they are “gonna have a whole new system for unlocks.”

Well, a Reddit user from Brazil has managed to snag a glance at the physical game case for the upcoming title – and it does reveal that a single-player mode known as Invasions will be present in the game:

“Travel through the realms of Mortal Kombat facing invasions of each season in an all new single player experience”

Now obviously this is a direct translation of what was present in the printed Portuguese, so localisation may eventually reveal a different descriptor – but it absolutely reveals some form of unique solo kontent for players. While it doesn’t necessary confirm itself as a Krypt replacement, it does seem to get some pretty big billing on the rear of the case – appearing as one of three major features being revealed, alongside the narrative campaign and the ‘Partnership Fighters’ system, also known as ‘Kameos’.

For those that are less confident in the Google Lens translation, native speaking Brazilian fans weighed in that the wording is pretty spot on. The mention of ‘seasons’ brought up some chatter, as some seemed to feel it was more speaking of some kind of seasonal kontent – raising suspicious of a battle pass’esque system – but Ed Boon already mentioned that those kinds of things are staying out of Mortal Kombat.

This leaves fans in a very fun, speculative space. If the Brazilian box has revealed something, we may well be able to expect a formal disclosure of what it all means soon. Or, far more likely – Ed Boon is about to shift into his highest trolling gear once more. The guy loves a giggle; and this is a prime opportunity.

Whatever the case, Mortal Kombat 1 is coming out in September – the smell of blood is getting pretty close, so waiting for an answer shouldn’t take long.
