Overwatch 2 Is Getting An Animated Prequel Miniseries

A neat little surprise was handed out today for fans of the Overwatch narrative – a mini series looks to be debuting on YouTube, serving as a prequel that will take a closer look at the events that lead to the ‘Omnic Crisis’.

Titled Genesis, the initial teaser trailer rapidly shows the utopia that humankind enjoyed as part of their AI breakthroughs – before devolving into the mechanical nightmare that consumed the world. A handful of familiar faces are seen, working to defend humanity from the rising threat – such as Gabriel Reyes (pre-Reaper), Ana, Torbjörn and Reinhardt. I guess you could argue that you technically see both Bastion and Orisa, albeit as the mindless automaton units that predated their rebirth into ‘bots with personality:

While a ton of responses to the news has people begging for this series to rival the incredible Arcane that debuted on Netflix and arguably set a whole new standard for Video Game narrative tie-ins, it is worth noting that this series is apparently going to drop on YouTube, with the first episode sporting a runtime of 5:13 minutes – so it’s safe to assume it is not some narrative juggernaut.

I am particularly keen to see exactly what kicked off the AI crisis that defines Overwatch’s conflict – considering that since the release of the game, AI has development at a breakneck pace in the real world. Maybe we will see ChatGPT get asked one too many stupid questions and decide to get rid of the problem.

Part one of three premieres July 6 at 9am PT. It is titled Part One: Dawn.
