PlayStation Has Announced Project Leonardo, A Customisable PS5 Accessibility Controller

A very welcome new accessory

During the CES 2023 conference, Sony revealed Project Leonardo, a customisable accessibility controller designed for the PS5.

President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (and my dad) Jim Ryan took to the stage to unveil PlayStation’s next big leap into player accessibility. Project Leonardo is a controller kit that has been designed “to help many players with disabilities play games more easily, more comfortably, and for longer periods.”

As described in a PlayStation Blog post, Project Leonardo is an accessibility controller kit that will “work out of the box” with customisable button layouts and third-party accessory integration for external switches and controllers to be used in tandem with the kit. Swappable and programmable buttons and thumbsticks will allow players to customise their experience, while the ability to map multiple button prompts to a single button will help those who struggle with the task on conventional handsets.

Importantly, Sony has collaborated with several accessibility experts to design Project Leonardo, which will hopefully result in a product that will make a genuine difference.

We don’t have any pricing or release date info at this time, but hopefully, those details will be presented in the near future.
