PlayStation Is Shutting Down Bluepoint Games, The Studio Behind The Demon’s Souls And Shadow Of The Colossus Remakes

20 years

PlayStation has decided to shut down development studio Bluepoint Games, the team behind the Demon’s Souls remake, the Shadow of the Colossus Remake, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

As reported by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, PlayStation will be shuttering the studio next month following a “recent business review.” Roughly 70 Bluepoint employees will be out of a job once the studio closes its doors sometime in March. PlayStation provided an official statement to Bloomberg, saying, “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftsmanship.”

While no specifics were provided beyond the “business review” line, this closure can seemingly be traced back to a rumoured live-service title being developed by Bluepoint before reportedly being cancelled in January of this year. According to the Bloomberg report, the team was working on a live-service God of War game as part of PlayStation’s huge push into ongoing titles at the time.

The Texas-based studio was formed in 2006 by former Retro Games staff. The team’s first game, Blast Factor, was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, beginning a long-standing relationship between the companies. Bluepoint’s reputation for remasters began to form shortly thereafter, with the team taking on the God of War Collection, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and the aforementioned Nathan Drake Collection.

The studio found huge public acclaim following its two incredible back-to-back remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. Remakes that managed to modernise the classic titles, while preserving the essence that made them special in the first place. PlayStation acquired Bluepoint Games back in 2021, and it looked like there was a bright future ahead for the talented team, but now we know that hasn’t come to pass.
