PlayStation Wants To Scan Fans And Use Their Likeness In Games With Its New Playerbase Initiative

You’re in the game

PlayStation has announced The Playerbase, a new program that will see fans enter for a chance to be scanned and have their likeness used in first-party PlayStation titles.

As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, this new competition-based initiative kicks off today, with entrants going into the running to be included in Gran Turismo 7. Open to folks in the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Africa, and Australia; those interested will need to head over to the Playerbase website to apply. To apply, you’ll need to sign in with PlayStation ID and answer a handful of questions, with a few select applicants then moving to a video interview before the final winner is chosen.

As I hinted at there, only a single applicant will make it to GT7, with their likeness to be used as a character portrait in the game. The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to spend a day scanning at a visual arts studio. The winner will also work with a designer to create a fantasy logo and vehicle livery, both of which will be available in the game.

While The Playerbase is starting with GT7, PlayStation will be branching the project out to other titles in the future.

“Over time, we look forward to expanding The Playerbase as additional PlayStation Studios participate, having fans featured in ways that fit each game’s own style and world. Stay tuned for more updates.”

It’s undoubtedly a cool experience up for grabs to one lucky duck, but it’s also very strange. I can see a future where NPCs in open-world games are scanned fans, which has a charm, but also a few downsides. Just think back to the proposal made in Spider-Man 2 and how that ended.
