Homemade cookies rising in the oven. A first kiss. The next season of Real Housewives. Some things are just worth the wait. Psychonauts 2 will be one of those things.
That’s not going to stop us from jumping onto any new morsel of news about the game though, and some rather exciting information has landed at the tail end of 2020. In its most recent backer update on crowdfunding website Fig, Double Fine has dropped the bombshell that Psychonauts 2 is officially content-complete. This means that the game is essentially playable from start to finish, and all content locked in. After this, it’s a matter of tweaking level design, hunting down pesky bugs and optimising performance and presentation to turn it into a finished product.
It’s big news for a game that’s been in development for almost half a decade, in that time seeing multiple delays as well as a buyout of the studio by Microsoft. The update also brings with it a nearly-ten-minute development update video that’s well worth watching, if not for the surprisingly frank discussion around cutting content and (the lack of) developer crunch, then definitely for the snippets of never-before-seen gameplay footage. Check that out below:
It’s exciting to know that, failing anything catastrophic, we should finally be getting Psychonauts 2 in 2021 for most major platforms. Stick with us here at WellPlayed for more as it comes!
