Steamforged Games has announced Resident Evil: The Board Game, a cooperative survival horror experience with a Kickstarter campaign starting October 26.
After publishing the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 board game adaptations, Steamforged has revealed that they’re heading back to the OG horror game to introduce a set of new mechanics. In this coop game, players will assume the role of different S.T.A.R.S members as they explore the infamous Spencer Mansion, all the while attempting to survive against the ever-present zombie threat.
As explained by Polygon, Resident Evil: The Board Game will stand apart from the other two entries by switching up the gameplay drastically. The preset scenarios are taking a back seat this time, with a tile-based exploration mechanic taking its place, similar to Betrayal at House on the Hill. This will result in players not knowing what’s behind each door, raising the tension while also staying faithful to the source material. Many of the other mechanics, such as the combat and tension deck will carry over with slight changes, but the core gameplay will be far more open and random.
As with many tabletop games nowadays, Resident Evil will have a 16-day Kickstarter campaign that will offer a number of expansion and add-ons, as well as backer-chosen stretch goals. This “choice-driven” approach will feature a narrative that plays out during the campaign, decided on by the community. The stretch goal rewards will then be determined by which S.T.A.R.S members make it to the end of the campaign alive.
Lastly, the campaign will offer a retro option that replaces all of the minis and components with assets that emulate the look and feel of the original game released back in 1996. Steamforged is well-known for their incredible miniatures and components, so I’m very keen to see what they whip up for this release.
