Sega acquired Angry Birds studio Rovio in August last year, so it was only a matter of time until some form of media was released that leveraged the two flagship franchises. Sure enough, March this year will serve as the time when belligerent birds finally meet the blue blur.
The official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel has announced five mobile games get crossover events that are starting today, targeting the following games for your pocket prison:
- Angry Birds 2
- Angry Birds Dream Blast
- Angry Birds Friends
- Sonic Dash
- Sonic Forces: Speed Battle
These events will only be running for a week, and are slated to end on March 21.
Each of the titles offers a particularly familiar gameplay experience for fans of either franchise, be it running or smashing piggy forts to retrieve eggs (or playing match-four, I guess?). The tie-ins the offer a range of themed features to add either a Sonic or Birds’ twist to the game of choice; be it Dr. Eggman making the piggy structures tougher – or Chuck and Red the birds running in place of Sonic.
It’s …something, at least. It was a surprise acquisition on my end, if only because I didn’t quite grasp why Sega was hungry for a mobile developer – but it turns out the answer is quite simple: They wanted help to influence the mobile space of gaming. And here we are, with the first foray into what that partnership looks like.
Now to see if any birds will pop up in a future console-borne Sonic title. Eep.
Do you play any of these mobile games? Are you interested in seeing birds, known for their flight capabilities, running at full speed? Let us know in the comments, or on social media.
