September 2022’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

A complete genre mix

If you have a PlayStation and you’re not picking up The Last of Us Part I (which we gave a 9), you’ve likely been waiting on bated breath to see what the PlayStation Plus games are for September. Last month we got the cracker bundle of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Little Nightmares, so hopes are that the momentum will continue into this month.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for September 2022 are Need for Speed Heat, Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Toem (PS5). All three games will be available to download from September 6.

The modern Need for Speed games have been a bit of a mixed bag, but that hasn’t stopped us from pining for the series to return to the top of the racing mountain. Luckily, NFS Heat managed to capture the magic of the older titles while injecting some modern elements into the mix (we gave it an 8). Blasting around Palm City (a stand-in for Miami) in ultra-fast cars is great fun, making Heat well worth a play for franchise fans or those who just want to burn some rubber.

Fighting game fans will undoubtedly know that developer Arc System Works know their way around a one-versus-one fighter. Granblue Fantasy: Versus features a colourful cast of characters that all sport unique fighting styles that can be pitted against each other in flashy combat. With an original story and an RPG mode, Granblue is a brawler that’s well worth your time. Oh, and the game is drop dead gorgeous, so that’s another feather in the cap.

A hand-drawn, monochromatic adventure game that focuses on capturing the beauty of the game world through photography? Sign me up. Toem has the player exploring the world, using their photographic eye to unravel various mysteries while meeting a colourful cast of characters. It’s important to point out that Toem will only be available to PS5 owners.

If you haven’t downloaded Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Little Nightmares, then you’ve got until September 5 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive at the moment.
